Forest Defenders Vow to Resist Eel River Sawmills and Pacific Lumber Logging Plans.

Petrolia, Ca.- Eel River Sawmills (ERS) has recently filed plans to log 64 acres in the Mattole Watershed with the California Dept. of Forestry (CDF). The Timber Harvest Plan (THP) # 01-03-045 is only a few miles upstream from a popular swimming hole at the mouth of Conklin Creek. The Mattole Forest Defenders say that they will take "non-violent direct action" to oppose what they view as a serious threat to the environment.

"Any company with plans to clear-cut old-growth forests on steep and unstable slopes in the Mattole watershed will be met with dedicated non-violent resistance," said a local forest defender.

In the plan, ERS proposes to clear-cut 50 acres and "transition" log 14 acres that they state in the THP are "primarily composed of" Douglas Firs, which can be as old as "150 + years" and " range from 30 inches (2.5 ft.) to over 80 inches (7 ft. 8 inches)" in diameter. They also state that the plan areas are for the most part "un-entered" forest with slope steepness ranging from 10-120%. The Pacific Lumber Co. (PL) is also involved with the plan. Their private access roads and helicopter landings will be utilized among other things.

Although activists are already busy this year in the campaign to stop PL from logging over 400 acres in what they consider an "environmentally sensitive and unique eco-system," they say they will give equal attention to both companies.

"We have already pulled down thousands of markers that delineated their plans to interfere with the approval process. More actions will be taken in the near future to stop both of these companies from liquidating Mattole old-growth forests to pay off their debts," said the Mattole Forest Defenders in a recent press release.
