Historic Longest Walk Will Visit Berkeley's Threatened Oak Grove Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 For Immediate Release - Contact: Karen Pickett 510-548-3113 Ceremony at 11 a.m. at Threatened Grove on Piedmont Ave., Near Bancroft Way Berkeley, CA-On Feb. 11, people commemorating the 30th anniversary of the original Native American longest walk will embark on a 5 month journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. The Longest Walk south route is being led by American Indian Movement (AIM) co-founder Dennis Banks, and will visit Berkeley's Oak Grove at 11 a.m., site of an Ohlone burial ground, after leaving Alcatraz early that morning. From the Oak Grove, the group will march to the Phoebe Museum on UC Berkeley campus at 11:30 a.m., where a controversy has been ignited because of the containment there of remains of Native people. From there, they will proceed to a rally at Sproul Plaza on UC Berkeley campus at Telegraph and Bancroft. see The Longest Walk is an extraordinary grassroots effort on a national level to bring attention to the environmental disharmony of Mother Earth, and sacred site issues.
