The Bay Area Forest Activist

How Irresponsible Logging Kills Fish

July 1, 2004

* Poor logging practices cause sedimentation of streams, killing salmon and steelhead eggs.
* Sedimentation impairs the ability of adults and juveniles to feed.
* Many sensitive stream zones are misclassified and therefore under-protected and subject to tree removal from streams.
* Removal of trees from stream corridors destabilizes banks, denies shade and results in higher water temperatures, often lethal to hatchlings, and reduces woody debris needed for creation of habitat pools.
* Slope drainage patterns are disrupted by skid trails, landings and haul roads.
* Poorly designed and maintained stream crossings block fish passage and cause chronic sedimentation.
* Toxic chemicals from vehicles and herbicide application flow into forest streams
and kill fish.
Bad logging practices are not the only thing that has pushed the coho to the brink of extinction. Overfishing, genetic pollution from farmed fish, ocean pollution, and other causes exist, but logging is a major contributing factor.
