After seven years of negotiations, litigation, community organizing and lobbying, the California Department of Parks and Recreation signed an option agreement in mid-January with Pacific Lumber to acquire 581 acres of redwood forest overlooking the town of Redway in southern Humboldt County. The forest will be added to Whittemore Grove to create an expanded wildlife reserve in the DeWitt State Reserve.
The Save-the-Redwoods League negotiated the deal. Stable Slopes Forever!, a grassroots forest preservation group under the fiscal sponsorship of Ancient Forests International, contributed $15,000 raised entirely from community donations to cover half the cost of the certified appraisal that led to the Option.
Taun Moondy, of Stable Slopes Forever! called the acquisition "our community's dream come true" and credited the victory to the Redway community's dedication to protecting the stately old redwood trees. "This is a wonderful example of community spirit and love for the land," she said. "This acquisition happened because of the community's efforts. It was a long time coming, but persistence and heart-felt determination now keep our Redway water source safe, the ridge intact, and the trees standing."
