Supporters of Jackson State Forest delivered over 1200 letters to the Board of Forestry in March, urging the revision of the environmental impact report (EIR) and associated management plan for Jackson Forest. The revision was ordered by the courts in September 2003 in response to a challenge filed by the Campaign to Restore Jackson State Redwood Forest. At its meeting in June, the Board will decide on the scope of the EIR process.
In late February, State Senator Wesley Chesbro introduced SB 1648--to "end the stalemate over management and protection of Jackson State Forest". The campaign has been working for four years to change the mandate for Jackson Forest from industrial logging to restoration. Senator Chesbro's bill moves strongly in this direction while allowing continued research and demonstration of forest management. Under his bill the forest would be used for legitimate public purposes. After passing the Senate and the Assembly Natural Resources Committee, it will soon go for a floor vote in the Assembly.
