The Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters organized a demonstration in San Francisco on Dec. 6 to draw attention to the tragedy of the current logging in Nanning Creek Grove, and to hold public agencies and elected officials accountable for the decisions that allow this logging in some of the last habitat of the endangered marbled murrelet. The rally was held at Sen. Dianne Feinstein's downtown SF office, since she, along with other government officials, was a principal negotiator of the 1999 Headwaters Deal.
The demo was a "Marbled Murrelet Fly-In", with about two dozen representations of marbled murrelets, two giant redwood tree puppets, and included a skit involving Maxxam CEO Charles Hurwitz and a chainsaw. Activists from EPIC, the Rainforest Action Network, Forests Forever, the Greenwood Earth Alliance, Earth First!, and the Campaign for Old Growth were present, as well as lots of BACHsters.
