Resistance continues in the ancient redwood forest in Humboldt county because, unfortunately, the logging continues in the Nanning Creek Grove, home to the threatened and endangered marbled murrelet.

Thank you to all who joined us for the marbled murrelet fly-in and demonstration at
Sen. Dianne Feinstein's office in San Francisco on Dec. 6. We brought attention to the fact that this logging in endangered habitat due to a loophole provision of the Headwaters Deal, which Sen. Feinstein helped negotiate with Maxxam's Charles Hurwitz. See the story and photo on IndyBay Media at http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/12/1788210.php.

Since then, there have been vigils and rallies at the gates to the access road to this logging plan, a demonstration at PL offices in Scotia, and continuing tree-sits in the old growth trees. On Friday, there were three people arrested after two young women climbed atop a giant portion of tree coming out on a logging truck. This was a "one tree truck", which means the length of tree is so big around--up to 15 or 16 feet in diameter--that only one piece can fit on a large diesel truck. See press release and pictures from the action (scroll down to comments) at http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/12/1788951.php

To see images and get news of the tree sits, visit www.WeSaveTrees.org. Keep in touch with our Berkeley office (510) 548-3113 to find out about carpools and to plug in. In Humboldt, call 707-825-6598. There are gatherings at the gates nearly every morning as logging crews go in at 6 am.

And if you can take more bad news, see the story about the crushing legal defeat in an appeals court reversal of a major legal victory concerning environmental groups' challenges to the Headwaters Deal. We will be putting out more information and analysis about this soon, since this Eureka Times Standard story certainly doesn't contain our spin. http://www.times-standard.com/local/ci_3304871

Stay tuned. Stay ready for activism and action.

ALSO--you can get a pre-print copy of our just-completed newsletter with info about Nanning Creek and a detailed update about Maxxam/Pacific Lumber. It will be on out website in a few days but we will send you a pdf copy by return email if you request.
