There are several links in this update to stories in the media over the last couple weeks--you may have seen these through other sources, but their importance bears repeating.
>>>REDWOODS ON THE RADIO
http://www.loe.org/shows/shows.htm?programID=06-P13-00002
links you to a show that aired this week on NPR's Living on Earth, certainly one of NPR's better offerings. Called "Redwoods Revisited" it contains a fairly comprehensive overview and history of Headwaters Forest. A transcript can be found at
http://www.loe.org/shows/segments.htm?programID=06-P13-00002&segmentID=6
>>>MORE REDWOODS ON THE RADIO, ALONG WITH RAIDER, CORPORATE, AND CONGRESSIONAL CROOKS
KPFA's Flashpoints show will air a segment on Thursday, Jan.19 covering current scandals involving crooked lobbyist Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and California's own Rep. Richard Pombo, along with their connections to Maxxam's Charles Hurwitz. BACHster Amanda Bellerby interviews redwood activists Karen Pickett and Kelpie Wilson. Listen to it Thursday between 5 and 6 pm, or find it on the archives after Thursday at
http://www.flashpoints.net
>>>See Kelpie's scathing Jan. 13 piece on TruthOut that inspired the Flashpoints piece: Republican Gold Diggers Hit the Wall at
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011206A.shtml
>>>AND FINALLY, THE LA TIMES THROWS THE COVERS OFF POMBO AND DELAY'S FAVORS FOR FUNDS FOR CHARLES HURWITZ. An in-depth explanation of the derailing of federal banking regulators claims against Hurwitz.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-banker8jan08,0,1764103.story?coll=la-home-headlines&track=morenews
(There are several other articles, including lame responses from Pombo, that can be found on the web as well. Contact us if you want referrals.)
This interesting media coverage comes at a time of some chaos in the GOP, AND with another interest payment from PL/ScoPac on the near horizon that will be another test of its solvency as corporate bankruptcy looms large. All of these things are related, as many of the same players are involved in the influence peddling scandals as well as Hurwitz's crony circles.
>>> ON THE GROUND, Maxxam/PL has continued logging in Nanning Creek (Bonanza Timber Harvest Plan) since our last update in December, with resistence in the old growth trees and at the gates many mornings at dawn. Wild weather has slowed down logging, but unfortunately, all administrative and legal remedies for Nanning seems to have been exhausted. Pristine forest with stunningly large trees remain in the vicinity of the tree sits. To see photos and video footage of the sits, go to http://www.wesavetrees.org
